McCall, you said that if we blogged on another blog we could get credit for it on our blog. Well, while procrastinating I commented on someone's status on Facebook and because it was very relevant, I think it should count too. Here it is:

Annie Abbate:

That is my entire Contemporary Philosophy class in a nutshell.......Which I'm currently procrastinating on doing homework for.

They (the Frankfurt School) would tell you that it came about with the rise of capitalism and the development of the culture industry. They'll also tell you all about how everything in your life has become a commodity and a lie and make you really depressed.

So will your blog grade.

Jamal K.

Annie, don't worry about it. There's no such thing as the rise of capitalism or a culture industry. There is only fear, greed, and manipulation. Everything else stems from that.

  3. Subat, the person who posted the firsts status was an English major and a philosophy minor...so it is to be expected.

I think that Adorno would say that this posting is an illustration of individual's inability to escape the influences and control of the culture industry despite an awareness of this control. He would say that microcosm of popular culture has been created for my "dark, pessimistic friends" which is why they can never escape it. Because this microcosm is provided little attempt is even made on their part.

I think that the last post made by Jamal k. was a good point. She says that all of this stems from fear, greed, and manipulation.

In my presentation (see previous blog post) I talked about how Erich Fromm states that people conform out of fear and anxiety at being separate or different from the rest of the masses. A crutial tool for the culture industry.

Adorno writes how greed is another key factor when he writes, "the objective social tendency of this age is incarnated inthe obscure subjective intentions of board chairmen, this is primarily the case in the most powerful sectors of industry:steel, petroleum, electricity, and chemicals," (Adorno 96).

Lastly, Adorno speaks of manipulation in the very first pages on the culture industry and writes, "the standardized forms, it is claimed, were originally derived from the needs of the consumers: that is why are accepted with so little resistance. In reality, a cycle of manipulation and retroactive need is unifying the system ever more tightly," (Adorno 95.

Jamal must have been following our blog.
